Rationale

Environmental pollution is an evident issue found in the world today. This is an alteration of our surroundings as a byproduct of man’s actions. Such alterations gravely affect the stability of nature’s ecosystems which in turn can endanger human health. Pollution is caused by various factors, however, one of its major causes is due to the overproduction and overconsumption of material goods. Throughout the years, the continual production of plastic-made goods such as plastic bags have served as one of the most common methods of packaging for many businesses and enterprises. Plastic packaging has been one of the most convenient ways in which consumers are able to acquire and receive material goods. However, the amount of packaging waste and even its manufacturing process has posed a significant threat towards the environment.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, containers and packaging make up a major portion of municipal solid waste amounting to 82.2 million tons of generation in 2018. This figure has continually been increasing as the rate of generated plastic packaging arises to meet up with the demands in the overconsumption of material goods. In regards to such issues, our capstone research tackles the sustainability and reliability of plantable packaging as an alternative to plastic and paper bags. This study tries to derive the effectiveness of plantable packaging in order to address the prominent environmental issues as a consequence of the excessive packaging wastes.

OUR ADVOCACY

Adopting a more eco-friendly approach has begun to gain importance due to the issue of climate change becoming more and more prominent in today's world. With this, the creators aimed to create an innovative and up-to-date solution for the world’s major plastic problem and fossil fuel usage as they continuously advocate, together, for the protection of the environment and local climate action responses.

At the same time, they aimed to utilize the gifts from God since all of man are stewards of God's creation. In the encyclical letter, Laudatu Si, Pope Francis stated that climate change research is unequivocal and that the Catholic Church regards climate change as a moral issue that must be addressed in order to safeguard the Earth and all who live on it. Thus, along with the recent worldwide scientist climate change protest, we are all called to do something about this major issue. The creators hope that this product, despite being created by students, may lead to a more sustainable future.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Pollution. This is a serious problem since it has a grave impact on both human society and the environment. It is harmful to human health as well as the health of all other living things. The researchers thus aimed to learn whether plantable and compostable packaging is a viable solution to this ongoing problem.

The research in creating this product aimed to answer the following questions;

  1. Is plantable packaging reliable enough to replace paper/plastic bags?

  2. How does compostable and plantable packaging contribute to producing sustainable businesses yet meet consumer demands?

  3. Does compostable and plantable packaging lessen waste found in the environment?

  4. How does compostable and plantable packaging support single-use packaging yet not serve as a threat to the environment?
